Overview

Charlemagne's empire is falling apart as Scandinavian raids sweep across Western Europe.

After her clan was massacred during a Viking raid, Inga and her servant Vigtis are captured and sold into slavery at the market in Arles. Torn from her world, Inga discovers a Carolingian Provence whose customs, beliefs, and rivalries are unknown to her—and whose fears she must come to understand in order to preserve her identity and inner freedom.

Taken in at the Fabrègue estate, she finds herself in the heart of a region weakened by the power struggles following the collapse of the Carolingian legacy.

Through encounters, conflicts, and cultural misunderstandings, La Princesse Barbare explores the clash between worlds that are complete opposites and examines the fears, prejudices, and mechanisms that lead people to distrust one another.
